Job Description

 ELECTRICAL & POWER ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS

NUCLEAR FUSION

BASED OXFORDSHIRE

At the forefront of research into nuclear fusion with its exciting potential as a long term, environmentally friendly energy source for future generations, excellent opportunities now exist for Electrical Engineers & Power Electronic Engineers to join their site in Oxfordshire.  As Electrical Engineer or Power Electronic Engineer you will support the existing installations and to take key roles in planned upgrades of experiments on the two flagship fusion research facilities.

Operating Europe's flagship fusion experiment and other research facilities, you will support the next generation of fusion machines.  Their research depends on complex power systems to produce precisely controlled magnieic fields that contain the plasma and also to power the RF and particle beam sources that heat the plasma hotter than the centre of the sun.  All these systems operate at multi-megawatt level and most are powered from their dedicated 400kV/ 36kV substation.  The total installed capacity exceeds 1000 MVA with individual plant ratings of up to 130 kV and 120 kA DC.

Requirements:

You should be qualified to degree level with the ability to work from first principles to solve problems for which standard engineering solutions do not exist.  We are seeking applications from Electrical or Power Electronics Engineers who have experience of one or more of the following:

  • - High-power power convertors, both line-commutated and forced commutated
  • - Pulsed-power electronics using thyristors, IGBTs, IGCTs, vacuum valves and other technologies in both linear and switch mode systems ranging from kW to 100 MW
  • - Energy Storage systems using capacitor banks or large flywheel driven generators
  • - Project management of engineering projects and contracts, especially where some research or development is required to find an appropriate solution
  • - Power circuit design, simulation and analysis
  • - High voltage AC electrical distribution and protection, including interlocking and personnel safety systems
  • - Electronic control and feedback systems, plant control and protection systems

Recent Electrical Engineering graduates with limited experience, but with an interest in a broad based and challenging career in power engineering are also welcome to apply.
